Who Are You?
Life is here, and if you want to love it
you gotta get down to the bottom of it.
Gotta find out what is really true.
You gotta ask yourself, “Who?”
Who? Who are you?
When you ask yourself the question “Who am I?”
Any answer you find doesn’t really apply,
because words and stories — even if they’re true
can never define the totality of you.
But nevertheless, I would like to suggest
a few of the names that fit you best:
You are Awareness. You are The One
Consciousness radiating like the shining sun.
You are The Mystery, The Great Unknown.
Sweetheart, you are God alone.
You are the Alpha, the Omega, Love, and Grace.
You are Joy that pervades all time and space.
You are Emptiness, like they say in Zen.
You are this moment Now, again and again.
You are That which is always here
through every moment of love, pleasure, pain, and fear
You are That which is here even after you die.
You are everybody’s answer to “Who am I?”
Who? Who are you?
Now these absolute values, they all describe you,
but you’re the tree, the dog, and the street sign, too.
You are every little thing that you come across:
rocks, bottles, books, burgers, and apple sauce.
You are the weatherman, the guru, your best friend.
You’ve got a list of names that has no end.
And it includes all the things that you’d rather not be
like pollution, confusion, your worst enemy.
You are the murderer, the thief, the druggie on the run.
You are the food you ate for lunch-and-what it will become.
Who? Who are you?
There is no solution, no missing link,
the answer to the question’s never what you think.
So if you’re still not gettin’ it, I’ll tell you how:
Just know a little less than you know right now.
Then forget everything you have ever believed.
Let thoughts come and then let them leave.
None of them are true, so just forget about ‘em.
The question is, what are you without ‘em?
Who? Who are you?
You are Life itself and you are having a ball
with your divine play as the Truth in All.
And, it’s a done deal, whether you know it or not.
You are everything I’ve mentioned and, man, you rock!
But nothin’ I’ve said is ultimately right.
